Students campaigning for improvement of recycling around school, are trying to raise awareness for environmental awareness and teach their school and peers on how to treat their environment better.

“The environmental degradation is a big issue that needs to be addressed, especially in the current political climate with the lowering regulations. We need to, as citizens, take initiative,” Ethan Lane, senior president of REACT, said.

Students involved in REACT are trying to spread awareness of what exactly can be recycled, according to Lane, he says many people did not know what was trash and what was recycling because they were not clearly marked, so the club members are trying to make sure the bins clearly state what can or cannot be recycled.

“Our main project for the spring was to raise awareness about recycling in the school, so we got all the bins in the cafeteria labeled, and put signs above the bins showing what needed to be recycled and what goes to the landfill,” Julie Gyarmaty, REACT sponsor, said.

The club’s recycling awareness campaign can create a more sustainable school, according to Lane, and have a population of students more informed about the issues of environmental degradation.

“Many people don’t even know that recycling is happening in our school,” Gyarmaty said. “We’re hoping now students will be more active in recycling materials that are able to be recycled.”
