Michaella Gregoire, junior:

“I won’t actually experience it personally [or] just straight up. But I’ve had experiences in my classes [of] having someone write the n-word on the board. I’ve been really lucky and blessed and it hasn’t really been that big of an issue for me. But that doesn’t mean that it just doesn’t exist. It just means I’m lucky and I’m blessed that they might not,” Gregoire said. “From [my] childhood, my parents have always told me. ‘You are a Black woman, and because you are a Black woman you must work harder. If you’re a woman, you must be three times better than any other man than any other person, but because you’re a Black woman, you must be 10 times better than any other person. When I was younger, I used to not really understand. As I got older and watched the news and all that stuff, I’ve become more educated on the issue, and on the history of African American and Black people, and other minorities as well. I’ve also experienced it just as a person [and] seen it firsthand.”
