Love songs, growing up for Nick Jonas

From racy photoshoots to his chart topping singles, Nick Jonas seems to be everywhere lately. Leaving his boyband image behind, Jonas released a self titled album to make a name for himself.

The first two songs on the album “Chains” and “Jealous” were both singles released to promote the album. “Chains” reached 31 on the Billboard charts, while “Jealous” reached 11.

The melody of “Chains” is lead by multiple drums in the background, creating an almost scary atmosphere. Jonas is singing about how the relationship he’s in is trouble, and he feels tied down.

“Jealous” is exactly what it sounds like, Jonas singing about getting jealous when men look at his significant other. Jonas shows off his falsettos in this song, as well as displaying his lower register.

The third song on the album, “Teacher” is mostly Jonas singing in falsetto, complaining about how ‘your mama never taught you how to love’ and and that he wants to ‘teach ya.’ The tempo of the song is fast paced, but the lyrics and Jonas’ voice don’t enhance the song.

“Warning” starts out slow, with Jonas exemplifying how strong his voice is. Both verses are on the slower side, with good lyrics, but the chorus ruins the song. Jonas belts the same word ‘warning’ throughout the chorus, making the song very boring, and almost unmeaningful.

The songs “Wilderness”  and “Take Over” scream out Jonas’ desire to steer clear of his Disney and boyband image. These songs, along with a few others that have some explicit lyrics, contribute to the Parental Advisory sticker on the cover of the album.

“Numb” is a song all about a bad breakup. Jonas sings ‘You were my sun, you were my earth/Breaking my heart one piece at a time/You don’t know what it is you do to me/Yeah you leave me numb.’ The beat is choppy, which makes it the perfect song for a verse from rapper Angel Haze.

“Push” is yet another sad, slow, breakup song. Jonas’ falsettos lead the whole song, making some of the lyrics barely understandable.

In the song “I Want You,” Jonas is pleading about wanting the girl of his dreams. He promises to never let her go, and that he’s going to fight for her, because ‘he’s got nothing else to lose.’

Demi Lovato helped Jonas with the song “Avalanche.” The song is slow and choppy, until the chorus, where both Jonas and Lovato belt out ‘I got pride you can’t hold your breath /We’ll crash down like avalanche.’

“Nothing Would Be Better” is one of the slower songs on the album, with Jonas singing about a relationship that was doomed from the start. He sings about how he wishes that they would work, but nothing lasts forever.

Overall, this album shows off who Nick Jonas really is. Some falsettos weren’t necessary, and some songs are better than others, but all together the album is great.
