Choir students have spent several weeks preparing for the New York trip, practicing songs and picking their roommates ahead of time.

From February 18-22, about 80 choir students will be sightseeing and performing in New York City. They will perform at Riverside Church and The Actors’ Chapel, visit the Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 Museum and Memorial, see Hadestown, a Broadway musical, and participate in a Broadway workshop.

“I am most excited to experience a Broadway show with the students,” Nick Juknelis, choir director, said. “I expect that it will be a first for many of them. Also, the 9/11 Museum is just an amazing and moving place. I think students will walk away with a much clearer understanding of 9/11.”

The choir traditionally goes on international trips, but due to COVID-19, they are staying in the United States this time. To protect against infection, all students going on the trip are required to be vaccinated.

“I think a lot of people were kind of disappointed and didn’t really want to go […] because a lot of people have been to New York,” Skylar Stanko, junior, said of the decision to forego an international trip. “But I know that for some of us, we haven’t been to New York and we’re just excited to have a trip in general and also know that there won’t be an international trip before we graduate.”

There are several different choir classes of different types and levels. Because of the numbers of people that are going from each choir, Stanko says, different choir classes will be performing some songs together in New York.

“Cantilena and Bel Canto are learning some of the same songs so that we can sing those songs in New York,” Stanko said. “And then Concert Choir and Troubadours are learning certain songs that are the same.”

Troubadours and Bel Canto are freshman choirs. Stanko is in Cantilena and Blue Notes, which are both honors choirs. Cantilena includes only sopranos and altos, and Blue Notes is a swing choir. All the choir classes were invited on the New York trip.

“I’m really looking forward to this trip because it’ll be my first trip with the school and I’m really excited to go with the choir,” Stanko said. “I think it’ll be really, really cool, even though it’s just in the United States.”
