Sports Recap: February 17-March 1

The Girls Track and Field team stands together after the Wheeling Meet on February 29. The team won the meet with a score of 88.5

Girls Basketball

Closing their season, the Girls Basketball Team had a strong finish to their year. The Bears played in the IHSA Semi-Final Regional on February 17 against Rolling Meadows. The Bears fought hard winning with a score of 47-44. Alayna Soukup, sophomore scored 15 points, Bailey Parks, freshmen scored 9 points, along Margueret Spear, senior with 7 points. The Bears went on to the IHSA Final against Libertyville on February 20, losing with a score of 50-38. Soukup, Spear, and Parks all scored 11 points.  

Boys Basketball
The Bears played Warren on February 29, losing with a score of 51-42. Soon after the Boy’s team faced Mundelein, taking another loss with a score of  63-41. Finally on February 26 the Bears played Waukegan winning with a score of 52-41. Looking forward the Bears will play in the IHSA Regional on March 2 at Stevenson High School.

Girls Gymnastics
The Girls Gymnastics team ended their season with a phenomenal third place finish at the IHSA State Competition. Kayla Bailey, junior placed first on the vault, and fifth on floor. Kelsey Rothas, senior placed sixth on floor as well. LZ will look forward to the Girls in their next 2020-2021 season.

Girls Track and Field

The Girls Track team has just begun their season. The Bears competed in a non-conference meet at Main South High School on February 18. On February 29 the Bears competed at the Wheeling High School taking first. Kelsey Rothas, senior placed first on pole vault, and right behind Teagen Jones, senior who placed second. For Rothas, this is her last year in the track program and hopes to achieve many things. “For my last track season my biggest goal is to win a third conference title with my team and to hopefully jump 12’6 and break the school record,” Rothas said, Also Brooke Johnston, freshmen placed first in the 3200 with a time of 11:34. The 4×100 relay of Audrey Pratt, sophomore, Kayla Bruce, senior, Elyse Dempsey, senior, and Maeve Griffin, senior also placed fourth. The girls will look forward to the Main South Relays on March 6,

Boys Track and Field
The Bears competed at Main South High School on February 19 following the Girls Track team. On February 25 the Bears also competed at Burlington Central High School where the team competed very well.

Boys Wrestling
Joey Mrazek, senior and Logan Neaurauter, senior continued to the IHSA State for wrestling. Mrazek placed fourth in the state, as he was the first state placer in almost 10 years. The Bears will look forward to their next season in 2021.
