Meghan Trainor’s “No” brings attention to harassment

While we have all heard “All About that Bass” and “Dear Future Husband” constantly played on just about every radio station, Meghan Trainor, singer-songwriter, has recently released a new song for us to get stuck in our heads. Trainor’s new release, “No” proves to be a catchy song with an infectious beat and an important message to all of its listeners.

“To say that Meghan Trainor has a difficult path with female-empowerment anthems is a little bit of an understatement,” Carolyn Menyes says in her review on musictimes.com. “Look no further than the ‘be proud of being thick because men like it’ on ‘All About That Bass’ or the stereotypical gender roles rooted in the lyrics to ‘Dear Future Husband.’ But now, the Grammy-winning Best New Artist is gearing up for her sophomore album, and its lead single ‘No looks to redeem all that.”

From encouraging your self-image, to defeating double standards, Trainor’s songs are delivered with purpose. The underlying meanings of each song are both important and relevant to all of its listeners.

“There are a lot of ways things could’ve gone wrong with ‘No,’ but fortunately, Trainor hits the ball out of the park. Her lyrics are clever, sassy, and full of attitude, but they don’t make light of the situation she’s facing,” says Alex Kritselis in his review on bustle.com.

With the lyrics “my name is no, my sign is no, my number is no, you need to let it go,” Trainor is promoting feminism by bringing attention to sexual harassment while emphasizing the right to say no.
