Blizzard of Giving is a school-wide event organized by Lake Zurich student council. The blizzard takes place from December 1st to December 11th and is a charity drive that donates canned goods, toys, and basic cleaning supplies to a handful of charities. Elise Reczek, sophomore vice president of sophomore class board and member of student council, is very involved in the school and the high school community.
“I am co-president of the sophomore class board, and am part of the charity section of student council, so I helped with a blizzard of giving along with the other charity events,” Reczek said.
The student council organizes this event by requesting that each club donates to one of the charity options. The charities are asked in advance about what supplies they need, or how Lake Zurich high school can help them.
“Sophomore class board decided as a group that we will be donating to Joanie’s closet! We are collecting resources like post it notes, market and other basic school supplies,” Reczek said.
This event is two weeks long, and is strongly advertised around the school through the use of posters, announcements, social media, and is a big topic in club meetings. Vanessa Mosquera, president of Freshman class board, is in charge of making sure her club donates to the food pantry, as a way to support student council in the charity drive.
“Freshman class board is donating to all four charities, like St Francis, Joanie’s closet, and others,” Mosquera said.
Students and teachers can donate, even if they aren’t in a club. All donations go to the four charities listed on the windows of the front office, which is also where students and teachers can donate.
