Having a sibling with a disability is something only some can understand. While students may think they are alone in what they are feeling, the upcoming Sibs Rock event gives these students a way to bond with other students who know exactly what they go through every day.

“This is an opportunity for sibs [siblings] to come together and meet other kids with similar family structures and discuss the blessings and challenges of having a sibling with a disability,” Susan Coleman, assistant superintendent, said. “Mostly, it is just a really fun evening packed with activities and games where kids get to know one another.”

This event is for students ages 5 and up who have a brother or sister with special needs and will take place in Studio C on Thursday, April 20, 6 pm – 8:00 pm. The activities will encourage sharing experiences in order for the students to get to know one another, and overall get recognized, Coleman said.

“Oftentimes we as parents spend so much time with our children with disabilities or just those that require more attention at home that we don’t always take the time to stop and celebrate the siblings that support our families,” Coleman said. “This event is a unique opportunity for them to be recognized and heard.”

“I think this event is a good thing because it does help kids with their social skills and be with their friends just like every other kid,” Lacey Ketcham, junior who has a brother with autism, said.

Sponsored by Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95, the Sibs Rock event requires advance registration which students can register here.

“We hope that the participants have a positive experience and recognize their contributions to their families,” Coleman said. “We also hope they make connections with other kids in similar situations and realize that they are not alone.”
