Haiku poetry event

All Honors English I classes and students from May Whitney are going to be attending Haiku day, a new field trip and collaboration effort to make poetry at the high school, on May 6.

“Haiku day is a really cool thing. It is a brand new thing that we’ve never done before. It is an event where we are working with May Whitney, the first and second graders to collaborate with them and to create some joint poetry,” Shannon Eichwald, honors English teacher, said.

Along with Eichwald, the honors English students are also excited for the event.

“I think it’ll be fun. When I was at Charles Quentin we got to do something similar with sixth graders and I was really excited. I was like we got to hang out with sixth graders and we were like so cool. I also really love working with other students and helping them improve their writing. Poetry is one of the things I enjoy, so I’m looking forward to this,” Linnea Petropoulos, freshman, said.

A specific type of poetry, the haiku, was chosen for the event for a set reason, Eichwald said.

“It is something that I think high schoolers and first and second graders can be creative with. They are not too overwhelming too and complex where that the poetry is main focus instead of everyone working together and having a good time,” Eichwald said. “Overall I think that it is going to be an exciting day and a new experience for everyone. It will also be a great opportunity for our English I honors students to be leaders of our school and ambassadors.”
