Italian Club sells gelato for Charity Bash

Italian Club sold gelato for their contribution to raise money for Charity Bash 2011. Members of the club were selling this Italian dessert during lunches on Friday, December 2.

Italian Club’s sponsor, Gianni’s Café, with locations in Deer Park and Palatine, along with their distributor, donated all of the gelato so all of the proceeds from the sale went to charity.

“We thought about what would raise a lot of money,” Leah Enright, Italian Club sponsor said.  “This idea to sell gelato worked out so well. Gianni’s invited members of our club to their Deer Park location to have a taste test. We were able to pick four flavors sell. They have been so helpful and generous.”

The members picked Pistachio, Cappuccino, Double Chocolate and Blood Orange. On the day of the sale Gianni’s also donated Vanilla Bean, Dulce de Leche, and Roman Raspberry.

“We ran out during 6th period so Gianni’s gave us more but they gave us more gelato,” Angelica LaVito, junior, Italian Club officer, said. “We were crazy busy. By the end of 7th (period) we had sold out of everything.”

Parents of Italian club members also helped with the fundraiser. One parent went to Gianni’s in the morning to pick up the gelato to bring it to school so it was available to be sold during 4th period lunch.

“We kept the gelato in coolers with ice, and the students just scooped the portions fresh,” Enright said.

While both gelato and ice cream are served well below the freezing temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, gelato is served 10 to 15 degrees warmer than ice cream. Because it is less solidly frozen, this sale could be done without a huge melting issue.

Italian Club raised about $628 for Crohn’s and Colitis. Because of the success of the sale, Italian Club plans to make it their annual charity bash project.

“I think everyone who bought some really enjoyed the special treat for a great cause,” LaVito said.
