Child Development Christmas Pageant

Santa Claus is not coming to town quite yet, but he is coming to school on Thursday and Friday for the preschooler’s holiday pageant. Don’t expect a completely polished performance, however.

“Half of the preschoolers get stage fright and freeze onstage while the others are just screaming the lyrics at the top of their voice,” said Kendall Cox and Katelyn Menas, senior Child Development Students, said.

Rosemary Caparelli, Child Development teacher has her own idea of why the show is so fun to see.

“The three year olds are pretty funny to watch, because instead of singing, they will be picking their noses,” Caparelli said. “The four year olds get into it a lot more. It’s a really cute and funny show,”

The annual show will be performed during second and third period and is free admission. The preschoolers will use headbands, red noses, Santa Claus figurines, snowmen, dreidels, little white tails, and red bells to enhance the performance.

Preparations for the show is not the only focus of the preschool class, however. In addition to preparing for the show, students in the Child Development Class teach the preschoolers how to be in school and work in groups, according to Menas and Cox.

“We are trying to get [the students] adapted to the classroom setting which is hard first semester but improves second semester,” Menas said.

One of the reasons Menas and Cox enjoy the little kids so much is because “They have a really innocent view of everything so they’re always fun and keep you on your toes,” Menas and Cox said.

One of the best experiences according to Cox was on Halloween one year when a girl decided to dress up as Elsa. The costume had a button in the middle, that played music, and she started to dance freestyle anytime someone pushed the button.

Audience members can expect both dancing and singing at the preschool show. The Preschoolers will sing and dance to a variety of holiday songs, while accompanied by a number of Child Development Students, dressed as elves, while the preschoolers will be dressed as reindeer.

“They have a really innocent view of everything so they’re always fun and keep you on your toes,” Menas and Cox said

According to Caparelli, the preschoolers get excited about the show and know that if they do a good job, then Santa will come to give them a present.

“They love it,” Caparelli said. “The kids are awestruck when Santa comes.”
