Bear Facts Flashback: Dispirited students voice their opinion

Each week, Bear Facts will post an article from a past issue.  These articles can demonstrate what life was like for a high school student in that year.  What seemed important to them that seems commonplace now?  This article ran in March 1979.

By Larry Peterson

Many students have expressed the opinion that Lake Zurich has little or no school spirit.  As a result of this pervading attitude, Bear Facts decided to ask the students what they thought school spirit actually is, and whether or not they felt Lake Zurich Senior High School had any.  Printed below are a few of their responses.

Anne Roloff, Sophomore – Spirit is not just going out for extracurricular activities and going to the games.  Spirit is being proudof our school and spirit here could be better.

Tom Kraft, Junior – Spirit is going wild after a Hildebrandt slam dunk, and spirit at Lake Zurich is getting better all the time.

Ginny Johnson, Freshman – School spirit is when the whole school unites as one.  If people would treat their school with respect the whole world would be a lot more peaceful.  If more schools would have spirit, Vietnam would have never happened.

Statements such as these were numerous and seem to reinforce the attitude that school spirit is an element which Lake Zurich High School lacks.  It seems safe to say that if spirit is ever obtained to its fullest extent, it will not be without a great deal of sacrifice and hard work.
