Bear Facts Flashback: Detention policy implemented

Bear+Facts+Flashback%3A+Detention+policy+implemented

Each week, Bear Facts will post an article from a past issue.  These articles can demonstrate what life was like for a high school student in that year.  What seemed important to them that seems commonplace now?

By Patti Tenecza

Serving detentions, a new policy for the second semester, was initiated by Mr. Miller and was approved by Dr. Cox and the Board of Education.

The main reason for this new policy is to keep the students in the classroom during the school day, and hopefully make them accountable for their actions after school. Mr. Miller explained that “students must realize their obligation of going to class while in school.”

The detentions are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in the library classroom from 3:35 to 4:15 p.m. Students must come with school work, be on time, and they must remain quiet. If a student doesn’t attend his first assigned detention, another one is added. If the student misses both detentions, suspension is probable. A detailed explanation of the policy is outlined below.

            After the first unexcused absence:

  1. A letter goes home to parents.
  2. The students is assigned one (1) after school detention.
  3. Students must make up any work missed.

After the second unexcused absence:

  1. A letter goes home to parents
  2. 1/3 letter grade reduction in quarter grade where cut incurred. Must make up all missed work.
  3. Student assigned one (1) after school detention.

After the third unexcused absence:

  1. Letter goes home to parents.
  2. 2/3 letter grade reduction in quarter grade where cut is incurred. Must make up all work missed.
  3. Students assigned one (1) after school detention.
  4. Possible loss of open campus and/or late arrival and early out privileges for duration of that particular course.

After  the 4th unexcused absence:

  1. Official letter goes home to parents indicating that the student has been dropped from that class with an “F” for the semester.
  2. Student is assigned to a quiet study hall for the remainder of that semester during that period.
  3. Student is assigned (1) after school detention.
  4. Student loses open campus, late arrival and early out privileges for the duration of that particular course length.

The cut system of the past was a sound system according to Mr. Miller, but over the years the students have devised means and methods to avoid the system. This detention system is hopefully a constructive alternative.
