New songwriter Von Zimmer’s Freddie’s Extra Teeth is nothing extra

When listening to an album for the first time, the first song you hear is sure to leave a lasting impression. After listening to Von Zimmer’s “The End of the World” on his Freddie’s Extra Teeth album, I sat in confusion before continuing to the next songs. After listening to his next song “Echo,” I had to force myself to finish the next eight songs.

While interesting at first, this bombastic sound becomes repetitive as you listen deeper into the album. Although the lyrics were relatable in that they were written about some tough topics, they lack a catchy beat, ultimately resulting in a flat sound,” said Kaysi Abbatoy in a review on bucsblade.com.

While the lyrics all shed light on flaws in society and the government, this theme repeats itself throughout the album. Each song has a very similar, but not very catchy, beat and the words are not especially clear.

“I was slightly disappointed as the songs persisted, though, because they all started to feel the same. No song in particular stood out, and all ten of their melodies were just too similar. At one point I checked to see how much longer one song was, only to find that it had ended and a new song had started without my noticing,” said McKenna Thurber in her review on ecrjournalism.com.

Although the lyrics may be strong, the songs sound like karaoke and are hard to understand. The album sounds as if it was recorded by Von Zimmer himself in his garage in South Dakota. The lack of change throughout the album and the difficulty to understand the words make it hard to listen to all 10 songs on the album. However, the unique style of Von Zimmer’s music can be found on spotify, itunes, and soundcloud.
