Insurgent lives up to its predecessor

Despite being yet another dystopian movie based toward a young adult audience, Insurgent finds original and compelling ways to keep the audience engaged from the opening scene to the ending credits.

The Divergent series follows a girl named Tris Prior, played by Shailene Woodley, in a society where everyone is divided into factions based on simulations. Tris does not fit into a faction, and the Insurgent plot line follows her journey as she tries to find out not only more about her world, but more about herself as well.

Woodley’s performance is incredible as she manages to keep viewers emotionally invested in her cause through the entirety of the movie. Her love interest, Four, played by Theo James, helps balance out Woodley’s rebellious character and creates a relationship worthy of support from the audience.

The special effects in Insurgent are high quality and help add to the ever-growing intensity of the plot. Camera angles such as when Tris is running through the forest also bring the viewer into the action that makes the movie as good as it is.

“[The new director] Robert Schwentke… brings a flair for taut and flavorful action. There’s no question that the feature is a leaner, meaner affair than its predecessor,” Sheri Linden said in article from the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie also takes place in Chicago, which makes it familiar and interesting in how the director sees the city in a dystopian society.

“[Divergent] was cool because there were a lot of Chicago scenes that were familiar, but Insurgent had way more action so I found it more entertaining,” Sarah Blase, sophomore, said.

The movie was able to do the book justice as well, Blase said. Despite the endings being completely different.

Overall, Insurgent was able to live up to the high expectations Divergent reached, and the constant action and mind-boggling simulations keep the audience engaged and locked in on the action-filled plot for every second of the two hour film.
