New singles, no new words

i want you to know coverIt’s 2012 all over again! Not only does “Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen have a new single out, but so do Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

New songs usually mean fun and exciting lyrics and messages, unless referring to theses newest releases. If blocking out the lyrics were possible, then the songs would be a lot more fun to listen to.

Jepsen, whose hit song “Call Me Maybe” reached number one on Billboard Hot 100 list, is back at it again. Her single “I Really Like You” has the same feel as “Call Me Maybe”: annoying and repetitive, yet sadly catchy.

The lyrics seems to be written by a twelve year old girl who thinks that she is in a serious relationship. “I really really really really really really like you” is the only part of the song that stands out because of how stupid and irritating the word ‘really’ is.

“[The worst line is] ‘I really, really, really, really, really, really like you,’ because as good as it is, in about six weeks we’ll be crying out ‘WHY WILL YOU NOT LEAVE OUR BRAIN? WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO DESERVE THIS,’” Carl Smith, SugarScape senior writer, wrote.

Along with the annoying lyrics of Carly Rae Jepsen, Selena Gomez’s are not that far behind. She’s either asking you to “Come and Get It” or crying about how “The Heart Wants What It Wants” and now she’s saying “I Want You To Know.”

Although the song isn’t hers, she’s the main vocal, singing along to Zedd’s beat. Zedd, who has been attached to projects with Ariana Grande and Hayley Williams, is the only reason the song is good. The fun dance beat and rhythm of the song almost take away from Gomez’s autotuned vocals and repetitiveness of the lyrics.

Gomez isn’t the only vocal featured on a new Electronic Dance Music (EDM) track, however. EDM Djs Skrillex and Diplo released a joint album, Jack U, which featured Justin Bieber on the song “Where Are Ü Now?”

The song is different from Bieber’s usual pop songs, with the beat a lot slower, and a distinct electric beat in the background. The beat in enticing, but the lyrics, just like Gomez’s and Jepsen’s, are repetitive and boring.

The beat of the song is the only thing really worth listening to, making it easy to drown out the lyrics.

Overall, it seems like vocalists ran out of words to say. The repetition is annoying, and the only thing making the songs listening is the beat or melody of the song. Listening to the songs before buying them would be a good idea. (And maybe artists should buy a thesaurus?)
