Anatomy classes go to watch open heart surgery for field trip

Anatomy classes are going on field trip to watch open heart surgery on February 10, 2016.

Other Anatomy classes have gone on this field trip before, but this is the first time this specific group will be going on the trip.

“We have been learning about the cardiovascular system and how the body functions, so seeing it in person will give us a better perspective and help us learn more about the functions of the heart,” Cai Hadaway, sophomore, said.

The class will be watching an open heart surgery so the class can learn more about the heart by seeing one in real life and how it works, according to Kaiden Mortimer, sophomore in Honors Anatomy.

“We rent a facility to go and watch the surgery,” Hadaway said.  “We can’t go in the room where they are doing the surgery, but we can go to a room where we can watch it.”

The class is also seeing how surgery works, so if students aspire to be surgeons, they can see what it is really like on an everyday basis, according to Mortimer.

“[Even though] we see pictures [of hearts] on the Internet and in our textbooks, we never see the real thing,” Hadaway said.  “It would be cool to see a heart in action.”
