New guards to bring extra security

The school hired new security guards before school started this year. The new guards will roam the halls, watch the doors, and supervise lunches much like last year’s guards.

Dave Rubenstein, site supervisor for security at the high school, says the new guards are needed to fill in a few new positions.

“We decided to have security in the cafeteria instead of teachers,” Rubenstein said. “They will also be doing bus duty after school.”

One of the new guards, Eric Rodriguez, was hired just before the start of the year.

“I just like working with kids,” Rodriguez said. “Working at the high school brings me back a lot of memories, so when I saw the opportunity I said, ‘I have to do it.’”

Valerie Redman, another new guard, graduated from the high school in the class of 2011.

“I like working in the cafeteria and interacting with everybody,” Redman said. “It’s cool to be on the other side, because I was there once sitting at those tables.”

The security guards have to watch and protect the entire school. Whether it be waiting with students for the buses at the end of the day, or watching us enter school at the beginning of the day, the guards are always on duty.

“The hardest part about the job is that you have to stand, about 90 percent of the day,” Rodriguez said. “You can get tired after a while, standing for the whole day.”

The guards, who started on the first day of school, look forward to the rest of the year, Rubentstein said.

“I’ve [been here] for a week and a day now,” said Rodriguez. “For now, this job is perfect for me.”
