Students in the journalism summer school classes went to Delicious Redd’s today to practice restaurant review writing. Two Bear Facts editors joined them to talk about their writing experiences.

Summer school classes slipped out of the school to learn in the real world today. The journalism classes took a field trip to a local hot dog shop to learn how to write a restaurant review.

Journalism students, along with the 2015-2016 Bear Facts editors, walked to Delicious Reds, a hot dog shop located on Main Street in Lake Zurich.

“It was really good,” Melanie Villarmarzo, sophomore Journalism 2 student, said. “This was my first time getting a Polish sausage and a Chicago style hot dog. They were both really good, and I really liked the fries.”

The trip was originally scheduled to take place on Monday, but due to bad weather, the group voted to postpone the outing.

“I think we made the right decision not to go on Monday,” Dayna Morga, sophomore Journalism 2 student, said. “Today was the perfect day to go, weather wise.”

But it wasn’t all fun and games for this field trip. Journalism 2 students were busy taste-testing foods and observing details about the diner include in their reviews.

“I think I did learn more about reviewing because you don’t really realize how much stuff you have to look at while you’re reviewing some place. You obviously have to review the food,” Morga said. But you also have to consider the “bathrooms, how clean the place is, how many people are here, and customer service.”

After trying out their Maxwell Polish sausage and Chicago Style, Villarmarzo and Morga said the food was “fast, easy, and really good.”

Overall the students thought the experience was great.

“I would definitely come back again,” Villarmarzo said. “It’s not my favorite place, but it’s a place where you could come to chill and eat some fries.”
