Bagpipe march celebrates Charity Bash total

To celebrate the totals of this year’s Charity Bash, a bagpipe player and drummer from the Northern Illinois Pipes and Drums led a procession, which included Student Council officers.

“The Student Council officers thought that it would be fun to celebrate the total of Charity Bash along with St. Patrick’s Day,” Chris Bennett, Student Council sponsor said. FullSizeRender (2)“Even though bagpipes are Scottish.”

This hallway march celebrated the total of this year’s Charity Bash which totals out at $44, 237, with all proceeds going to St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This is the second highest total raised, behind only the Make A Wish Foundation in 2009.

“I’m happy overall with this year’s results,” Bennett said. “We raised about $21,000 more than last year.”

This event was partly organized by Megan Bajor, English teacher, whose husband is also a firefighter with Brian Blaauw, a Lake Zurich firefighter who plays the bagpipes. He was joined by other members of the Northern Illinois Pipes and Drums for the march. After the hallway march, Blaauw and others will perform during passing periods in front of the Main Office.

“This is obviously one of his busiest days,” Bajor said. “He’s doing parades and all kinds of things. He wears a kilt, and he’s just amazing. It was great for him to take time because it was really just a last minute thing.”

Many students enjoyed the march and Blaauw’s performance. This was a unique way to celebrate this year’s Charity Bash.

“I felt like this year went really well and I saw a lot of people donating money,” Kalynn Rhew, sophomore Student Council member, said. “I know I donated a lot for St. Baldrick’s and I’m glad that we raised so much money for such a good cause.”
