District Choral Festival will be held in fieldhouse

All District 95 choirs will perform together at the 16th annual District Choral Festival on Saturday, October 25 in the LZHS fieldhouse.

Choirs from all over the district, ranging from elementary school choirs to high school choirs will perform together to create a total of 700 students, almost 13% of the district’s students, according to Nick Juknelis, high school choir director.

“It started as an opportunity for the middle school students to see what singing in high school was all about,” Juknelis said.

The concert, usually drawing in about 2,000 people in attendance, will serve as the only fall concert, according to Juknelis. It is used to “recruit” younger choir students and show them what it will like to sing in middle and high school.

Since the music will be sung by fourth to twelfth graders, the music is easier for the high school students and allows the choir to focus on other skills during the first quarter that do not have the deadline of a concert and audience, according to Juknelis.

“Overall, this is  a super fun concert because we all get to come together as one and do what we love,” Trisha Balda, senior, said.

The music that will be performed at the concert is American music. The highlight includes a medley of the Armed Forces where Dr. Michael Egan, superintendent and announcer of the event, will recognize anyone that has served the country.
