The District 95 Board of Education held an open community forum to discuss the mandatory random drug testing program that the board has been considering, last Wednesday night.
About one hundred parents and community members were present in the Middle School North Cafeteria with almost all parent comments opposing the proposed plan.
Parent after parent walked up to the podium and addressed the board with their opinions as to why the board should not pass the program due to many different fears the program brings.
Commonalities among parents and community members included the concern that the severity of the drug problem at LZHS, how the program would be funded, and the confidentiality of positive tests, just to name a few.
Another common concern was the idea of the school overstepping its boundaries.
“A drug-free environment should be a school’s job,” Karen Abry, District 95 parent said. “A drug-free student should be a parents job.”
