First annual Sing Off competition comes to LZHS

The first annual LZHS Sing Off will be held in the PAC on Monday, November 24, at 7pm.

The first 20 people to sign up outside the drama room were admitted as participants and will compete in three rounds of elimination until one final LZHS Sing Off champion is chosen.

“Considering it is the first year, I don’t know how it will turn out,” Paige Savarese, junior, said. “It seems cool because it is supposed to be like The Voice. So many people sing at the Coffee House hosted by Drama Club, so it makes sense why they created a separate singing competition.”

Each participant sings three songs individually or with a partner as they go through the three elimination rounds.

“I am definitely singing ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears, ‘The House of the Rising Sun’ by The Animals, and I am still deciding on the third song,” Savarese said.

Unlike some of the participants, Savarese is not in choir and only performs solo.

“I do not do well in groups. I learned my singing style from listening to jazz music, The Beatles, and Frank Sinatra,” Savarese said. “My dad is also a musician and was in a band. In fact, the same guy who produced Britney Spears and *NSYNC also produced him. My aunt is an opera singer and my uncle has been on Broadway. Everyone in my family has musical talent, except my mom. With that said, I have learned from my family members and teach myself.”

As for her goal, Savarese does not have a specific one in mind.

“I just want to do my best. I am not a competitive person and I just like to sing,” Savarese said. “I am not sure how the judges and audience will vote, since it is the first year for this competition, but I just want to sing and show my talent.”
