Protecting light colored eyes

Sunscreen may protect the skin from the sun, but people with light colored eyes need more than just SPF to protect themselves.

Both green and blue eyes are a lot more sensitive and at risk for long term problems then brown eyes. If not protected and taken care of, blue and green eyes can contract keratin, different kinds of ocular cancer, and more.

“Lightly colored eyes do not have as much pigment on the iris; therefore, more UV enters the eye which can lead to more sun damage them a darkly pigmented iris,” Dr. Kelly Oliver, optometrist, said.

Light colored eyes are a recessive trait, meaning they are more rare than brown eyes. Though it is easier for light eyes to experience damage, there are ways to prevent it.

“Polarized sunglasses and yearly eye exams are the best way to protect your vision, not only for light colored eyes but dark ones as well,” Oliver said.

Though light colored eyes are more sensitive, it is important to protect all types of eyes from the dangers of UV rays. Brown eyes can be injured as well, but people with dark eyes can use the same precautionary measures as people with light eyes to keep themselves safe.
