Blackhawks: bringing you the winning merchandise

For one student, the Blackhawks win means long hours at work

Senior Ashley Cobb was angry the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Monday night – not because she’s not a fan, but because she knew what it meant: spending game night setting up and selling championship merchandise at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Deer Park.

“I didn’t want them to win because I didn’t want to deal with [it],” Cobb said, “otherwise, if it doesn’t affect my job, go Hawks!”

Cobb was called to work on Monday night from 9:30pm to 1am to set up Blackhawks merchandise after the team won the Stanley Cup. The constant flow of people and long lines made Cobb call the event “worse than Black Friday.”

“Before we even opened the doors, the police were outside [to manage the crowds],” Cobb said. “There was way too many people.”

Dick’s closed at 9:30pm and store employees spent 45 minutes pushing away racks to allow people through and setting up 8-10 tables filled with merchandise. The store reopened to anxious crowds at 10:15pm, Cobb said.

There was a “constant flow of people” from then until midnight, Cobb said, although the rush dwindled after midnight to just “stragglers until 1am.”

The night ended for Cobb well after midnight, but that didn’t stop her from waking up early to go to summer school the next morning for her Consumer Education class. Even though Cobb said she was tired the next day, working on game night wasn’t without its high points.

“One customer bought all his stuff and was about to leave, and he screamed, ‘Go Hawks!’” Cobb said, and the reaction was immediate. “The whole entire store [yelled] ‘Woohoo!’”
