Alessia Cara, discovered on YouTube, could be the next Amy Winehouse

Rising pop star Alessia Cara’s debut EP Four Pink Walls foreshadows a successful future for the 18-year-old, recently signed, YouTube cover artist.

Reaching a peak of approximately 964,000 views on a cover, and over 500,000 streams of her first original song in its first week online, the support Cara receives from her fans is without a doubt, well-deserved. With her fresh face and old soul, Cara relates to and inspires teens everywhere.

Seeing that Cara has yet to release an original album, the original singles she has have allowed for rising excitement for her future albums. With only a handful of debut EP’s, Cara leaves her fans in anticipation for  her albums to come.

While Cara’s personality and musical expression resembles that of Amy Winehouse, her lyrics and musical style also mirror that another 18-year-old pop singer: Lorde.

Since the age of 13, Cara has expressed her love for singing through acoustic covers of popular songs and posted them to her YouTube channel. While Cara became popular for her outstanding covers, she has written only one original song to date.

“This is somewhat ironic, because Alessia’s only officially-released original song to date, ‘Here’, is a side-eyeing, anti-party anthem that doubles as an ode to discerning wallflowers,” commented Jenn Pelly in her review on pitchfork.com.

The progression from Cara’s first YouTube cover video of Jessie J’s Price Tag to her most recent videos of live performances, Cara’s career has grown immensely. Cara’s cover of Sweater Weather by the Neighborhood is what sparked her discovery. With nearly 74,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel, this cover reached about 964,000 views.
