Bombs Away does not bomb at all

Star Rating: Three and a half out of five

Best known for the radio hit “Geronimo,” Australian based Sheppard’s new album Bombs Away is definitely a feel-good album worth buying. The songs on the album are varied and interesting, and the sound is original. BS_Review_BombsAway

Bombs Away is an innocent, rhythmic, light fuelled album that keeps you in its grasp for the majority of its 41 minutes,” wrote Arne Sjostedt, reviewer for The Sydney Morning Herald. “This outfit can write songs. Songs that take aspects of modern/’90s pop, indie and a dash of nu-folk and blend it with something very much their own.”

The band is composed of the Sheppard siblings, George and Amy, who are the lead vocalists, and Emma, bassist. Rounding out the group are Michael Butler and Jason Bovino, guitarists, and Dean Gordon, drummer. Each member contributes to the light-hearted sound.

“I really like the band,” Morgan Kaplan, sophomore, said. “I think it’s cool that they formed a band as siblings, and they have really great sounds. The music they write is diverse and has fantastic lyrics. It’s hard not to find yourself singing along with their music.”

The album is full of a variety of songs, and many tracks are excellent break up anthems, especially the catchy “Let Me Down Easy” and “Find Someone.” However, even without a broken heart, the songs are fun to sing as loudly as possible, as are the love songs like “Smile.” Arguably the best song on the album is “Halfway to Hell,” which is a much heavier and more forceful song than the others, but still enjoyable.

“I think it’s a really great album,” Kaplan said. “It’s nice to have an album that isn’t all one type of music, not all sad, or not all upbeat. There’s a good mix to it, so you could listen to it whenever.”
