Boys’ bowling team never spares the competition

The boy’s bowling team has high expectations as they begin a new season. The team has gone to State the past three years, and their goal is to go again this year.

“We’ve had a lot of progress in the offseason,” Peter Kupfer, head bowling coach, said. “We would like to go back to State again and do well every time we compete.”

Kupfer is entering his sixth year as head coach, and looks forward to seeing the team progress as bowlers and people.

Rolly Vazquez, athletic director, is excited to see what the team has to offer this season. Vazquez is very pleased with the coaching staff, assistant coaches Steve Schmitt and Mark Giannecchini, who volunteer their time to help the team.

During practice, Kupfer places obstacles, such as PVC pipes, on the lanes so the boys get a feel for the lanes and get comfortable.

“The goal of the PVC pipes are to improve our aim,” Michael Wormley, junior, said. “It’s a big help, especially if you’re struggling to hit your mark.”

Although the team has been able to do well in the past, the team is not well known to the student body.

“I know there is a bowling team, I know a few members of the team, and I know they practice a lot, and overall, they’re a pretty good, solid team,” Shaun Repplinger, senior, said. “At one of the basketball games, they came out on the court with the trophy, it was pretty cool.”

Members on the team really feel they’ve prepared their team to succeed all the way to State.

“We’re a lot different this year,” Wormley said. “I think it’s the first year that a majority of the team bowls in the off season and we’ve got some really heavy hitters.”

Returning members are juniors Mike Schmitt, Chris Orabutt, Michael Wormley, and senior Tony Giannecchini.

Orabutt is looking forward to the direction the team is heading.

“This year we have one goal in mind: to win state and do the best we can until we get there,” Orabutt said. “And so far, we’ve accomplished that.”
