A wicked performance by Bare Voices and Blue Notes goes back to high school to get greasy

Though Bare Voices and Blue Notes successfully performed their first ever collaborative piece together at an annual concert, things still got greasy.

Both musical groups participated in the On Broadway themed concert last night, opening with a choreographed dance, displaying both groups’ talents in one song.

“For one number we got to combine with Blue Notes. It was fun because we are not a dancing group, but it was cool to be able to collaborate and dance with them,” Teah Mirabelli, sophomore Bare Voices member, said. “I thought tonight went pretty well. I think [with] how we prepared and how much effort we put in really reflected on our performance, so I think we did a good job.”

Not only did the groups perform well together, but Lara Kolb, senior Blue Note member, was overjoyed with the results of “her team’s” performance.

“I am so happy with how it came together. I have a good feeling; I’m about to watch the live stream, and I’m pumped. For the most part, this concert was very solid and I’m very proud of all the girls that we all pulled through,” Kolb said. “It was great. It took a lot of time, patience, and teamwork.”

To put out a performance like last night’s took time and rehearsal, in which both groups have been putting in.

“Every day in class was something new,” Kolb said. “We would go over songs, learn the choreography, and then sometimes we would have after school rehearsal or we’d come in at 7:15am. These last couple of weeks we’ve been coming in in the morning to rehearse.”

Although the groups put in the time and worked hard for yesterday’s performance to be flawless, there are always challenges, some unexpected, according to Mirabelli.

“The performing part [was the toughest part] since we’re so used to singing inside of our classroom,” Mirabelli said. “You don’t really have to put much into your face or your body, but when you get out in front of an audience, you have to look like you’re into what you’re doing. Even if you already are into what you’re doing, you have to show it on your face so it doesn’t look boring.”

As for Kolb, she said she enjoyed every minute of performing – especially when she was dressed as a Pink Lady.

“Performing Grease [was my favorite part of tonight],” Kolb said. “It was about 10 minutes [long], it was a Grease medley, and it had Those Magic Changes, We Go Together, Beauty School Dropout, Grease Lightning, and Hand Jive in it.”

As Kolb looked back on her favorite part of the night, she realizes it was one of her last performances and she’s “really going to miss it.”

“It’s a fun 40 minutes of your day to just dance and sing as opposed to just sitting in a desk for a period,” Kolb said. “You get to stand up, move around, everyone’s got a great sense of humor, and we all have a good time.”
