The new location for the Literacy Center gives students the opportunity to work with others at large tables, or by themselves at computer desks, without being disrupted.

The Literacy Center has moved from room A104 to A133 in order to become a “more comfortable place for students to work.”

The Literacy Center in A104 is used as a student resource room, as well as a place for English, Social Studies, or Language teachers to run their class for the day in the large open room with computers and other equipment. However, administrators and other teachers decided the workspace was no longer suitable for students.

“That room being the size it was, seemed it was better suited for teachers to bring their classes down there to use it as a resource room with the computers,” Rose Weismann, Literacy Center supervisor, said. “To combine the two was difficult because if a teacher was trying to discuss an assignment with a student and there was a class in there, it was distracting and loud. It was not the most comfortable environment for a student to come in and seek help.”

The new, smaller classroom has 15 computers, long tables with power outlets for students to work together and charge their devices, and printers.

“We believe it is going to be more intimate,” Eric Hamilton, assistant principal for curriculum and instruction, said, “However, it is going to be better for those one-on-one conversations or small group discussions about whatever area you need help in.”

Although the room change is expected to attract more students, some like Shreya Talukder, junior, feel that the larger space of A104 made collaborating with other students easier.

“I feel like A104, since it was a bigger room, there was a lot of computers with big tables and all the students could sit together, interact with each other, and actually help each other,” Talukder said.

The new Literacy Center is now open in A133 during all periods. Students are also welcome to come before and after school from 7:15am to 3:45pm.
