New cinema club studies the silver screen

There’s so much more to movies than what viewers see on the surface of the screen, according to John Cotter, junior.

The first meeting of Cotter’s film club will be Thursday, March 12, after school in room D220. Cotter inherited the idea from 2014 grad Michael Savio, who was unable to start the club during his time at the school.

“He said he couldn’t do the film on his own at this point because he was a senior and it was too late, so he brought the idea to me,” Cotter said. “He had a very similar idea to me, but I want to show movies and then just talk about them.”

The club will look deeper into the realm of cinema than most people usually look, according to Cotter.

“Movies are a big part of pop culture and I just want to introduce more aspects of film to people that maybe haven’t seen that part of cinema,” Cotter said. “Basically, more independent stuff, or even just broader films but kind of showing them what makes the movie good as a whole.”

Tim Dailey, English teacher and film club sponsor, looks forward to the students’ new opportunity to look at film differently than they have in the past.

“I think it’ll give kids who really appreciate classic film an opportunity to discuss these films, to watch these films, and to share their ideas with each other,” Dailey said.
