Language classrooms, Special Education classrooms receive new desks

New desks were placed throughout the B-hallway classrooms over the summer. The gray desks with separate black chairs replaced old and broken desks with attached chairs in nine language and two Special Education classrooms.

The District supplied a total of 300 desks to replace the original desks. Each classroom received 30 flat-top desks to accommodate for larger and changing class sizes, according to Ryan Rubenstein, assistant principal for student activities and facilities.

“Before the end of the [2013-2014] school year, all of the bad desks were marked. Good ones replaced the broken ones, and new ones replaced the good ones,” Rubenstein, said. “We’ve never had a desk replacement program, and things deteriorate over time.”

Any desks in good condition were given to other classrooms throughout the building that still use desk-and-chair combinations. Desks in bad condition were disposed of and replaced.

In addition to changing class sizes, the new desks also allow flexibility for teachers in their teaching methods. Other classrooms around the building, including math classrooms, have undergone improvements and new desks allow for more student interaction, according to Rubenstein.

This is the first time in 15 years that new desks have been added to language classrooms, according to Rubenstein. The desk replacement program plans on replacing more desks throughout the building in a few years.

“In the next four to five years, we are planning to replace another 300 desks, and continue from there,” Rubenstein said.
