Kiersten McDevitt, Vada Murray, and Natalie Ullman, juniors, pose after running into Lake Zurich. The Girls’ Track and Field team has been participating in the Purple Plunge, a fundraiser that is run by the American Cancer Society, for many years.

Athletes that usually throw shotputs, jump over hurdles, and compete in races will be jumping into a cold, icy lake in on March 5. Girls’ Track and Field athletes will be participating in the Purple Plunge to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

“The Purple Plunge takes place at Breezewald Park and is run by the American Cancer Society,”  Vada Murray, junior, said. “As a track team we try to do a lot of charity work and Purple Plunge helps us support the community while still having a good time.”

Participants are required to pay a fee to enter and are also encouraged to raise money, which all goes to the American Cancer Society.

“By signing up to run into the lake, you create a fundraising page which friends and family can donate money to the American Cancer Society,” said Kiersten McDevitt, junior.

Participants run into a freezing Lake Zurich dressed in costumes, the track team in their uniforms, in order to raise money for cancer research. The track team has been taking part in the Purple Plunge for many years.

“The best part [is] the atmosphere and also knowing that this simple, fun activity is greatly impacting someone,” Murray said. “The worst part was driving home soaking wet and barely being able to move since I was frozen.”

To sign up or donate to the ACS, participants can go on American Cancer Society website.
